Welcome to Mark's guide to using the web to improve your English...

The web is an almost infinite resource of materials that can be used to improve your English. On it you can find materials that will help you improve your reading, writing, listening and even speaking.

You can also work on improving your grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation and study skills.

However, not everything put on the web is perfect. You might find some exercises that are not very well designed. They might be confusing to use, not very useful, or even full of mistakes. Don't forget, anybody can publish a web page.

This means that it is essential, even more so than with books, to be able to evaluate what you use quickly and efficiently. After all, it's your time and money that you are using!

How to use these pages

  1. Start by looking at the worksheets. These are designed to be printed out, and then used to help you to decide which sites are REALLY useful.
  2. Decide what kind of site you would like to look at (grammar, vocabulary etc.) and then go to that page.
  3. Visit one of the links and evaluate the site for yourself by using the appropriate worksheet (there are 3 different types).
  4. Come back and choose another site!

Some excellent general purpose websites

Dave Sperling's ESL Cafe

One of the first and certainly one of the largest of all the ESL sites. Very wide-ranging and full of exercises covering almost every area of English.

Linguistic Funland

Follow the link for exercises and activities for students. A large listing of links to sites designed to improve your English, some good, some bad!

Tower of English

Slightly confusingly organised, with an 'elevator' that takes you different 'floors.' Try the floors above the fifth floor. You might find a film that you really enjoy, or a good language game.

Internet TESL Journal

A well-selected group of links. These sites have all been created or selected by a group of Internet-friendly teachers in Japan.

Good luck and have fun!
